UDHAMPUR, APRIL-13:- A one-day seminar on the topic ‘’Role of Dr B R Ambedkar in Women Empowerment” and a Poster making competition on the theme: -Life and Contribution of Dr. B.R Ambedkar was organized today by Government Degree College Udhampur to commemorate 131st birth anniversary of Bharat Ratan Baba Sahib Dr. B.R Ambedkar.

The event was hosted by College Heritage Club, in collaboration with Literary Club and Department of Music GCW Udhampur.

College Principal Prof. Kewal Kumar was chief Guest, while Professor Kali Dass a renowned scholar, social activist and regular columnist was guest of honour and chief resource person and M R Bangotra, a social worker and member of Ambedkar welfare society was the special guest.

The program begins with the lighting of the ceremonial lamp and offering floral tributes to Dr. B. R Ambedkar.

The Principal of the college along with the convener of the committees welcomed the guests by presenting bouquets. Dr. Mool Raj, convener of literary club, introduced the chief resource person and other dignitaries present in the program.

The Principal of the college, in his welcome address, extended warm greetings to the chief guest and also applauded the efforts of the Heritage club, literary club and Music department GCW Udhampur for organizing the event. He also urged the participants and audience to uphold the teachings of Dr. B.R Ambedkar by following the concept of Equality, Freedom, Franchise and fraternity.

Seminar was convened in two sessions, in the morning session ten speakers from various colleges of the vicinity presented their papers on the given topic and shared many unknown facts about the struggle of DR.B. R Ambedkar in emancipation of women. In the afternoon session, eight speakers presented their thoughts and highlighted the unprecedented efforts of Baba Sahib in shattering the dogmatic set up of the society against women.

The special guest M. R Bangotra emphasized on the role of women in various capacities like mother, sister, daughter, wife and house maker and urged to follow the teachings of Baba sahib incorporated in Indian constitution for upliftment of women folk.

The Chief resource person Prof. Kali Dass elaborated the condition of women pre and post implementation of Indian constitution.

While highlighting the pre constitution era he touched the ill practices prevalent in the Indian society like, Sati System, Child Marriage, Female infanticide, lack of education among women folk, Purdah system and many more.

“But after the implementation of the constitution all such practices were declared as offences by law as these were blots on the face of Indian society” he said. He also acquainted the participants about various articles of the Indian constitution for protection of women rights.
